Winkle:
Bio-inspired coffee frother

Winkle is a coffee frother inspired by one of the most commonly seen flowers known as Madagascar Periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus). The objective of the project is to study and inculcate aesthetic values of nature in it's CMF values and form of the product.

Initial Form:

The initial form of the periwinkle bud naturally depicts the desired form of the product. The initial bud is in an elongated conical/cylindrical form which makes it perfect for baseline silhouette of the product.

The blooming pattern

The blooming pattern of Madagascar periwinkle is the main biomechanical behavior that stands apart from the rest of the buds. The petals are wrapped around each other and during the process of blooming, the petals move radially and outwards to show the inner parts of the plant.

Abstraction

I started off deriving abstract forms of the initial idea. Depicting the folding patterns of the petals, and sketching out random abstract forms helped me create a basic silhouette of the desired form

Ideations and Process

The ideation process started with rapid sketching and explorations on the basis of forms.  Selected forms were then tried using EVA foam and Clay mockups. The final design was then 3D-printed and finished with N.C. putty

Materials And Finish

The main idea behind using leather mold ABS and polished shiny surfaces was to create an emotion of luxury and earthiness that comes with the colors too. The natural aluminum finish with "Seance" brings the product dual tone finish.
